Microbundles, Manifolds and Metrisability
Microbundles were introduced by Milnor in the early 1960s. The purpose of microbundles was to fill the gap for general topological manifolds which was filled by fibre bundles for smooth manifolds. The theory came to a halt when Kister showed that Microbundles are Fibre Bundles, to quote the title of his paper. Well, his proof relies on a partition of unity argument, which will be discussed briefly, and therefore really only applies to metrisable manifolds. The bulk of the talk will be devoted to the situation regarding microbundles over non-metrisable manifolds. In this situation microbundles definitely are not fibre bundles in general: indeed it will be shown that the tangent microbundle over a manifold is a fibre bundle if and only if the manifold is metrisable.
A small and informal workshop on Applying Elementary Submodels to General Topology will be held this week at York.
