EXAM INFORMATION

1. You must bring a photo ID to each exam.
2. Write the exam in pen. If you use pencil to write the exam, complaints will not be accepted about the marking of the exam.
3. Use of a calculator is not allowed on any exam.
4. Go to the appropriate room for each hour exam.
   • If you are in Section A, go to CLH L.
   • If you are in Section B and your last name begins with a letter between A and L, go to CLH A.
   • If you are in Section B and your last name begins with a letter between M and Z, go to CLH B.
   • If you are in Section C, go to CLH L.
5. This list of formulas will be included as the last page of every hour exam and the final exam.
6. Exam 1 will be given on Wednesday, October 8, 4:30 to 5:20 p.m.
• This exam covers Sections 1.2 through 1.6.
• There will be 14 questions of varying lengths.
• One mark will be given for entering your correct name, student number and section.
• Know the statements of the definitions of the limit (1.5.1, 1.5.2, 1.5.3).
• Know the statements of the Intermediate Value Theorem and the Maximum Value Theorem (1.6.2, 1.6.5).
• There are 3 questions involving inverse functions.
• There are 3 other questions involving inverse trigonometric functions.
• There are 3 questions using the two limits of 1.5.4.
7. Exam 2 will be given on Wednesday, November 5, 4:30 to 5:20 p.m.
• This exam covers Sections 2.2 through 2.7.
• There will be 7 questions of varying lengths. (One question has 2 parts and another question has 7 parts.)
• Four questions require use of the chain rule.
• Two questions involve differentiating trigonometric functions.
• Two questions involve differentiating inverse trigonometric functions.
• Two questions require knowledge from Section 1.4.
• Know the statements of Rolles Theorem and the Mean Value Theorem. (Theorems 2.6.2 and 2.6.3)
• There is one straightforward graphing question worth 30 marks. See previous exams.
• All derivatives can be computed from formulas. There will be no question asking you to compute a derivative from the definition.
  However, there will be a question of this type on the Final Exam.
• No derivative formulas will be given on the formula sheet - you must memorize them.
• You do not need to simplify your answers.
8. Exam 3, will be given on Wednesday, November 26, 4:30 to 5:20 p.m.
• This exam covers Sections 2.8, 2.9, 2.10, 2.12 and 3.2.
• There will be 7 questions of varying length.
• The formula sheet will be the same as for Exam 2.
• Know the basic facts about trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions from Sections 1.4 and 2.5.
• Know the methods of Section 1.5 for evaluating limits, in case L'Hopital's Rule is not applicable.
• The term absolute maximum of f will be used for a maximum of f, and the term absolute minimum of f will be used for a minimum of f.
• You will not be asked to state any definitions or theorems. However, you should know the statements of all variations of L'Hopital's Rule as well as Theorems 3.2.8 and 3.2.10 so that you can apply these theorems properly.
9. The Final Exam will be given on Sunday, December 14th, 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Tait McKenzie Student Fieldhouse.
• Bring a photo ID to the exam.
• You will not be allowed to use a calculator on the exam. The arithmetic in all the questions can be done easily without a calculator.
• There will be 21 questions of varying length with a total of 200 marks. Seven of the questions have more than one part.
• There are many similarities between this year's final exam and the Fall 2002 final exam.
• Final exams from 1999 to 2002 are posted on the course webpage.
• Math 1300 exams from before December 1999 are of limited use. In particular, they are based on a different text which covered more topics on integration. On the other hand, they did not cover inverse trigonometric functions and L'Hopital's Rule which we cover. Atkinson exams are also of little relevance for these reasons.
• You will be given the same Formula Sheet as in Exams 2 and 3.
• Know the basic facts about trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions from Sections 1.4 and 2.5.
• You will be asked to compute one derivative from the definition (first principles).
• There will be three questions involving absolute value. In particular, recall that |x| = sqrt(x^2).
• You will be asked to give the precise statements of three of the following theorems.

• There will be no proofs on the exam. However, you are expected to be able to state the above theorems and apply them.
