A couple of comments to follow my remarks of yesterday regarding recent
experiences in Geog as we prepared a Constitution.

1 Some felt the exercise was a waste of time and opted out.
2 Some felt the exercise was run by 'them' and served to divide the
department.
3 Some felt the exercise detracted from the business of the Dept, namely
to teach and excourage good research.

The exercise of changing government, introducing new procedures and
structures is likely to be more successful if it is clearly related to a
Vision Statement and/or a Mission statement which is widely supported. For
example, the 2020 VISION and the Mission Statement of the Faculty of Arts
could provide useful documents in this regard. Also, I think it is vital to
link debate on governance to academic activities and the REDUCTION of
committees etc so that any new committees, reporting structures etc are
not added to those that currently exist.
