The Governance Committee should consider abolishing the nominating
committee of the Faculty of Arts. I have during the strike expressed on
YUFA-L (April 12) the
following reasons why I think nominating committees should be abolished:

First, the concept, role, and functions of nominating
committees at all levels could be misinterpreted and
misused. They should be abolished.

Second, we all should seek and promote the
participation of all our colleagues through an
electoral process that is open, inclusive, and fair.
Otherwise, those of us who sit on committees including
some very powerful and important committees do not
have the legitimacy to exercise authority on behalf
the rest of us.

Third, the basic principles of fairness, transparency
and participation cannot be achieved without putting in
place a system of communication such as comprehensive
multiple email lists through which those voting and
the candidates can exchange information about why and
who they are voting for.
