Probably you refer to k-means? You can find a review of such methods in:
Fuzzy clustering using scatter matrices
P.J. Rousseauw, L. Kaufman, E. Trauwaert
Computational Statistics and Data Analysis (Elsevier), vol. 23, pags. 135-151, 1996
(inside is the Gustaffson reference).
You can find the Gath and Geva reference in the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks
Journal, it is from 1991.

The book "Finding groups in data: an introduction to cluster analysis" Kaufman and Rousseaw,
John Wiley & Sons, 1990 is another useful reference.
