LECTURER IN STATISTICS

Department of Mathematics
University of Western Australia
Perth, Western Australia

SALARY RANGE: Lecturer Level B $45,194 - $53,669 p.a. (Australian dollars)
CLOSING DATE: 8 May 1998

Applications for the above position are invited from men and women with
good teaching skills and active research and applications interests.
The appointment will be at Lecturer B level (roughly equivalent to a UK
Lectureship or US Assistant/Associate Professorship) for a fixed term of
3 years. Preferred starting date is early July 1998.

The University of Western Australia is consistently ranked as one of the
highest quality universities in Australia, both in teaching and in
research. The student intake has one of the highest average entrance
standards of any Australian University.

The Department of Mathematics is a large combined department
incorporating Pure and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, all 3
sections having an excellent reputation. A fundamental role of the
Department is the teaching of Mathematics and Statistics at both the
undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and in this respect it is
responsible for the needs of students majoring in Mathematics and
Statistics as well as for students enrolled in various other disciplines
represented on the campus. At the first year level, a wide variety of
courses are offered in this way to students in Science, Engineering,
Economics and Commerce, Psychology, Agriculture, and other areas. At
second and later years, the Department offers specialised courses
designed to fulfill particular students' needs. Among these is a
`Quantitative Finance' stream which presents an introduction to the
stochastic process theory underlying much of modern finance practice, to
mathematically able Economics and Commerce students. In addition to
these commitments, the Department wishes to expand its role in the
general Mathematics of Finance area, as well as to initiate or
strengthen collaborative contributions to other applications areas.

The appointee will contribute to the Department's general teaching,
research and collaboration programme. Emphasis will be placed on the
co-ordination and teaching of an introductory Statistics course to first
year Economics and Commerce students. An applicant who combines this
interest with some background in Economics/Commerce, and the ability to
contribute to the Quantitative Finance program, will be viewed most
favourably. However, applicants with a background in other areas of
statistical/probabilistic research and applications, are also encouraged
to apply. The Department strongly supports the involvement of its
statisticians in collaborations which lead to participation in joint
research projects. In particular, teaching and research collaboration
in disciplines of continuing or increasing interest to Western
Australia, such as Geophysics, are targetted for growth within the
Department. Applicants should have a PhD degree in Statistics or
equivalent, demonstrated skill in teaching Statistics and evidence of a
high level of scientific productivity. The ability to supervise Honours
and PhD students is essential. Applications must address the selection
criteria and applicants with teaching experience are requested to submit
a teaching portfolio as part of their application. For further
information and copies of the selection criteria please contact
the Head of Department, Professor A.J. Baddeley on (08) 9380 3342
or email: head@maths.uwa.edu.au. The Department's WWW home page is

Benefits include superannuation, fares to Perth (if applicable) for
appointee and dependent family, removal allowance (if applicable), study
leave and long service leave. Conditions of appointment will be
specified in any offer of appointment which may be made as a result of
this advertisement.
