[S] exporting large data frame

dear all

i'm working with:

Version 3.3 Release 1 for Sun SPARC, SunOS 5.3 : 1995
on a SUN ULTRA 1 with 128 MB memory and a huge amount of
diskspace.

some days ago i tried to export a large data frame (12418 rows/
307 cols), because the original file is on a tape and i'm a bit lazy, with
the following command:

write.table(DFndatch6194.s, "N6194d.dat", sep=" ",
dimnames.write="colnames")

after recognizing that this will take some time i started the job on a
sunday at 15:00h. it started immediately with disk-IO operations (but i
did not understand to what purpose...)

on monday 12:30, after 21.5 hours, the job was still running (a lot of
disk-IO) but had not even tried to initialize the new file on my
harddisk!

so my questions are:

is it generally impossible to export large data frames from splus to
ascii?

hypothetically, if all my tapes are corrupted, is the way of exporting
this data frame with dump() or dput() faster in combination with a little
c-program or ksh-script?

thanks for any help,
frank
