[S] Command line editor problem

I use emacs as my editor and Splus Version 3.4 (Unix) Release 1 for Sun
SPARC, running SunOS 4.1.3_U1.

Emacs commands work as they are supposed to, except for ^p, which recalls
not the last line but (apparently) the first line of a stored buffer of
lines. At least, a second ^p gives the sort of beeb that ^n does when I try
to recall the line as yet untyped.
I have not been able to discover what caused this fault (it always used to
work) and cannot find anything to fiddle with to try to fix it.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
