I made a little mistake in my previous post which went:

According to Alan Zaslavsky:

|> Xmat_as.matrix(x)
|> dimnames(Xmat)[[1]]_character(nrow(Xmat))
|> print(as.matrix(Xmat), quote = F, right = T)

I don't understand why the print statement is necessary. In my
experience, as.matrix(Xmat) is sufficient.

What I meant was as.data.frame(Xmat) works fine with no quotes on the
character columns. For some reason, the data frame is not checked to
see if the row names are unique. I call that a feature, so I'd hate
to see it fixed.
