I am running s-plus 4.0 release 2 under winnt 4.0.

Is there a "straightforward" way within a function to determine that a call
to nls() has failed to converge so that some alternative action can be
taken when this happens? If not nls(), can this be done with any of the
other nonlinear fitting routines?
