Thanks to the many folks who responded so quickly to my question about

"Syntax error: unknown expression ("\r") used illegally at line 2,..."

As many have suggested, the problem lies in dos files having an extra
carriage return that unix files don't, at the end of each line. I need
to ftp the file in ascii mode, or alternatively use dos2unix to strip
the \r's. I had six responses within about 20 minutes, and by now have
had at least 17. I hope no one minds not being thanked individually.

Thanks again.
