The intro message to S-news does ask that advice about third-party addons
is sent to their authors in the first instance.

In this case the answer is that, yes, under SunOS4 you do need acc to
use the compilation facilities of Splus COMPILE in S-Plus 3.4. And this
is mentioned explicitly in the Install file!

Without acc you have three workarounds.

1) If you have gcc you could use that. As far as I recall if you link
gcc to acc in a directory on your path this will then work.

2) If you have gcc and can alter the S-Plus account, you can edit the
makefile SHOME/newfun/lib/S_makefile to a suitable call to gcc.
Under S-PLUS 3.3, you need gcc -munaligned-doubles.

3) If you have only the bundled cc, you can link acc to cc _and_
copy over the files in our KandR directory as described in the Install
file.

As a more general comment, the S-PLUS 3.4 for Unix supplement has (p.10)
a list of the compatible compiler versions. You can use others, but
may well find problems with compiled code. So if reporting problems,
please check your compiler version.
