[S] displaying pairwise comparisons of means

I use Splus version 3.4 under HP-UX 9.0.5.

I'm looking for a way to display visually the results from a
pairwise comparison of means. I am also looking for an Splus
function to implement it. My current problem has one factor with
ten levels. The best idea that I have is to use a dot chart to
show the means, and then draw circles around the dots representing
means that not significantly different from one another. This
would be similar in spirit to the diagram on the cover of Milliken
and Johnson's _Analyis of Messy Data_, which is also their figure
15.2 on page 193. Has anyone written an S function to implement
such a figure, or a related one?

Many books use multiple levels of underlining to show which means
are significantly different from one another, but this is not
possible here, since I have ten levels and the description of each
is 1-3 abbreviated words long. Because of these lengths, a
horizontal dot chart seems to be the way to go.
