Several of the function declarations in <S.h> have empty argument lists. In C++, these functions appear to have a (void) argument list.

If you're a C++ fan that refuses to give in and code in C (methods, classes, rah rah rah), then it's best to design your own S interface. I have a rudimentary one, with new/delete, streambufs for S I/O, and prototypes for call_S, Warning, and Recover. If you want to use my code, inquire and I'll e-mail it to you. (It's not commented, though, because it wasn't intended for public release. Use it at your own risk!)
