[S] QUESTION: unexpected behaviour of trellis countourplot()

Dear collegues,

In trying to superpose raw data onto a loess-fitt
where the loess fit is plotted with trellis' contourplot(),
I met a strange behaviour of contourplot() which I do not understand
(I'm using WinS+3.3 under Win95).
Can someone point out what's going wrong in the following:

# The following two functions give the same result: smooth contour lines

contourplot(KAT~BMIP1*DOSIS, data=temp2)
contourplot(KAT~BMIP1*DOSIS, data=temp2, panel=panel.contourplot)

# But if I write my own panel function just calling panel.contourplot()

contourplot(KAT~BMIP1*DOSIS, data=temp2
, panel= function(x, y, subscripts, z, ...){
panel.contourplot(x, y, subscripts, z, ...)
# here I plan to plot my raw data
}
)

# then I do not get the same result: contour lines are less smooth!
# Shouldn't those three versions give the same results?

Thanks for any help

Best regards
