[S] Object browser and starting S-PLUS 4.x

I am trying to settle on the best default method for setting up
project directories and using S-PLUS. I'm using 4.5, which so far
is much more solid that 4.0 release 3, although I'm still having an
occasional problem where I need to destroy and recreate _Prefs.

My question is this (I'll summarize for s-news): I am used to making
a shortcut to Splus.exe in every project area, to specify
S_PROJ=project directory S_PREFS=some central place to store _Prefs
and setting 'Start in:' to project directory. Then I click on the short cut
to start S-PLUS. Once in, I often still have to adjust the filter or
list of attached databases.

An alternative way to enter S-PLUS is
to save your customized object browser to the project directory
and click on its icon. I think you can use Options ... Startup to
set S_PROJ to the working directory (and save this as your default
browser in a central area such as c:/splus45/users/me) but there is
no place to set S_PREFS, to keep from cluttering every project area
with this rather large _PREFS directory. Another problem with
clicking on the object browser icon for entering S-PLUS is that
I keep getting two object browsers opened and keep getting asked
questions about whether I want certain default _Data areas attached.

It seems that what is needed is a marriage of information stored in the short cut with the
project-specific object browser. Other ideas are welcome.
