Thanks to Chuck Taylor and Duncan Mackay. For advanced users,
Chuck Taylor (of MathSoft) has a .guiFirst function that streamlines
how the object browser is opened. At present there is no way for a stored
object browser to contain other useful information such as
what the "Start in" field specifies (see below).
For new users, Duncan Mackay (and I) feel that using a separate
shortcut in each project directory is still the way to go. Quoting from Duncan:

To start S-plus in the folder "C:\My Documents\MYSTATS\my Splus stuff", I
have the following line in the "Target" field of my Splus shortcut icon:-

"C:\Program Files\splus45\cmd\SPLUS.EXE" S_DATA="C:\My Documents\MYSTATS\my
Splus stuff\_Data" S_CWD="C:\My Documents\MYSTATS\my Splus stuff"

and the following line in the "Start in" field:-

"C:\My Documents\MYSTATS\my Splus stuff"

This does away with S-PLUS creating a separate _Prefs directory for
every project.
