[S] subroutine keeps crashing my simulation

I am currently running a simulation study which at one point
optimizes a function. I am using nlminb for this step. Most
of the time everyhing works fine, but every now and then nlminb
crashes, taking the whole simulation with it. The error I am
getting is:
Error in .Fortran("mnb1"), : subroutine mnb1 : 1 missing
value(s) in argument 2
I have two questions:
1) What does this error mean and how can I avoid it?
2) Somewhat more general, is there a way to avoid crashing the whole
simulation program when it encounters an error such as this? I am
already writing the previous results to disk so I don't loose those
but I would like to be able to run the program without having to
check and restart it every half hour or so.
