Yes, no (except in simple cases by gam and lo), but take a look at Clive
Loader's locfit library at

http://cm.bell-labs.com/stat/project/locfit

and in the one-regressor case also sm.logit in the Bowman-Azzalini library
sm (on statlib I believe).
