[S] Incompatibility between Splus97.xla and Excel VBA

Splus97.xla, from Mathsoft is an Excel add-in that provides wizards to
assist in creating and modifying S-PLUS graphs. However, it seems to
cause problems with the execution of VBA routines. Any ideas why, or
what to do about it?

I noticed that, the copy that installed in the Office\Library directory is 9KB
smaller than the one in the splus45\excelwiz directory, and is missing the
Contents, Custom, Summary, and Statistics properties tabs. Should I be
concerned? Properties does indicate that they were both created Aug

I am running local installations of S-PLUS 4.5 Professional Release 1 and
MS Office 97 SR-1 under Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 with Novel
Netware 4.11.

The attched Excel VBA code runs with no problem if Splus97.xla is not
loaded, but consistently produces the following error if it is loaded:

EXCEL.EXE - Application Error

The instruction at "0x3006790a" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "read"

Click on OK to terminate the application
Click on CANCEL to debug the application

The VBA routine that I attempted to run was:

Sub timetest()
Sheets(2).[A1] = "Hello World!"
startit = Time
For i = 1 To 25000
Cells(i, 1) = Sheets(2).[A1]
stopit = Time
dif = stopit - startit
MsgBox "from " & startit & " to " & stopit & " took " & dif
End Sub
