[S] Reading dates from SAS data sets

I've been reading SAS data sets into S-Plus for quite some time now and
have never had a problem. I now have some data sets with dates in them and
these don't seem to get read properly into S-Plus. I seem to get either a
column of NAs or a column containing numbers and slashes (arranged in no
meaningful way) and I don't know why I sometimes get the one and sometimes
the other.

Has anyone successfully done this? Do the dates have to be specified in a
special way in SAS before making the SAS data set, or does something have
to be specified in S-Plus? In any case, any information on this issue
would be greatly appreciated.

Please respond directly to
and I will post a summary of the solution(s).

Thank you,
Melvin Olson
