[S] Merging two datasets

I've encountered a problem with SPlus 4.5 (updated to SP#2) under Windows 95.

I have two data frames. One frame has 2524 rows and 87 columns (it is
about 1.8 MB on my hard drive). The second data frame has 151 rows and 42
columns. The 42 columns in dataframe 2 are also found among the 87 in
dataframe 1. I want to merge dataframe 1 & dataframe 2 into a 3rd
dataframe that contains only the 42 columns common to both. This is simple

In an effort to do this quickly I simply used the menus to merge the
dataframes. I don't know whether this is simply too big a merge to attempt
on a PC or not, but I've certain done merges with much larger datasets
inside SAS.

In any case, on a 300 MHz PII with 192 MB of RAM and at least 5 GB of paged
RAM, SPlus 4.5 just starts thrashing my hard drive and more than an hour
later is still thrashing. If I CTRL-ALT-DEL out (the only way to stop
short of rebooting), the Control Panel tells me that SPlus is "Not
Responding". In other words, in the past hour, the machine has simply quit
attempting to merge the two frames (I know this because I tried several
more times, but interrupted the process after about 30 seconds -- with the
same response).

I haven't tried to do this via commands yet, but will shortly. In the
meantime, have I hit a known "wall" in the Windows 95 implementation of
