[S] generalising regression smoothers

Hello everyone,
the regression smoothers in SPLUS (loess, cubic splines...) require a
constant neighbourhood size (span) over the entire range of independent
variables. I can imagine cases in which changes in the dependent variable
occur much more rapidly in certain regions than in others. For such cases,
one might wish to allow the neighbourhood size to change in different
regions. Does anyone know if this has been studied? Has it been
incorporated into an SPLUS function?
