Kim Pilegaard and I have been corresponding about the problem with
mixed.text() and mixed.mtext() that Kim encountered on a Solaris
installation (reported in a message last week). We determined that
the problem was that a locale variable was set on Kim's machine
(LC_NUMERIC=da.ISO8859-15) that causes numbers to be written by awk
using a comma rather than a period as a decimal mark. This can be
fixed by setting LC_NUMERIC=C before running S-Plus or by modifying
the function afm() so that the variable is reset before running the
awk command. I pass this on for the benefit of other European users
who may be using this locale.
