Assignments and evaluation for Math 1580/90
There will be no time-limited tests or examinations and evaluation
in both courses will be based largely on effort expended. Although
ingenuity will be valued, its development will not be a principal
aim of the course. Group work will be encouraged but you may be
required to describe your input into joint projects. Within these
guidelines, the evaluation will be broken down as follows for each
half course:
- Assignments: 40%
There will be 6 assignments in each term, due at 2 week
intervals. Some of these assignments may take the form of oral
presentations to the class. Others will be in writing. In
addition to giving possible solutions you should describe how you
arrived at them. Your written assignments should be in clear
language (complete sentences, etc.) and the pages should be stapled
together. You are encouraged to work together but such
collaboration should be noted on your assignment.
- Class participation: 25%
This is an important aspect of the course. Attendance is
expected at all classes.
- Journal: 15%
This is an important assignment for developing your powers of
reflection and meta-cognitive awareness. Full guidelines for
journals are given here.
- Take home examination: 20%
This will be similar to the assignments, but you will have
more time to complete it.
