Dr. Cook, who is Professor Statistics at the University of Waterloo and holder of the Canada Research Chair in Statistical Methods for Health Research, received his PhD in 1993. Since then he has published extensively in the areas of statistical methodology, clinical trials, medicine and public health, including many artic! les on the statistical analysis of recurrent events in journals such a s Biometrics and Statistics in Medicine. He is an active collaborator and has coauthored many papers in the medical literature which involve the analysis of recurrent events. Dr. Cook has consulted widely with pharmaceutical companies and has contributed to the design and analysis of numerous clinical trials. 
Dr. Lawless is a Professor of Statistics at the University of Waterloo. He received his PhD in 1969 and since then has published extensively on statistical methods for survival and event history data, applications in medicine, public health and reliability, and other areas. He has published many articles on the analysis of recurrent events in journals such as Applied Statistic! s, Biometrics, Statistics in Medicine and Technometrics; he is also the author of the book Statistical Models and Methods for Lifetime Data (2nd Wiley Edition, 2003). Dr. Lawless has consulted widely in government, industry and public health and was a holder of the GM-NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Quality and Productivity from 1994 to 2004.
