The class meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 to 10:30 in
Vari Lecture Hall D.
My office is N530 in the Ross building.
See my
course page for office hours after classes.
You are also welcome to make an appointment to see me. Just
e-mail or phone me.
My telephone number is 736-5250 (ask for me) or 736-2100
extension 55250. However,
I check my email frequently and often the best way of reaching me is to
send me an email. Be sure to check your spelling and grammar
before sending off your email though --- my response time to sloppy
emails is much longer than to carefully written ones.
The MathStat Lab in rooms S520-S534 of the Ross Building
is staffed by graduate students and others who can help with
material from MATH 1310. The time the lab is available will be
listed on the door.
The PASS program at Bethune College has also provided suport for
this course. Peer assisted study sessions are held Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 2:30 to 4:00 in room
224 of Bethune College.
Evaluation
The mark for the course will be based on the following components:
- Assignments checked for completeness at random, but not
marked, will count towards 10% of the final mark.
- Three tests held during class time will be worth 17%
each. These tests will be held on the following dates:
- Monday, January 30 (The test will cover Sections 3.4,
3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.9 and 4.2.) The solutions are now available.
- Monday, February 27 (The test will cover everything but
focusing on Sections 4.1 - 4.7, 4.9 and 4.11. ) The solutions are now available.
- Monday, March 26 (The test will cover everything but
focusing on Sections 5.1 to 5.5. and section 5.9. ) The solutions are now available.
Do not make any other plans for those dates.
- The final exam will be worth 39% of the final mark. The final exam for this course is scheduled for
Wednesday, April 18th at 7:00 PM. It will be held in Room 109 of
Accolade West. You will be given a sheet of standard facts to use during the examination ---
have a a look at it before hand. You can find examinations from
previous years on Professor Kochman's 1310 web page.
To prepare for the examination do these exercises.
- There is a second final examination scheduled for Tuesday, May
29 from 7:00 to 10:00 PM in Curtis Lecture Hall "M". Only students who have obtained deferred
standing through the Mathematics and Statistics Undergraduate Office are allowed to write this examination.
Students of this course will be able to find their scores for the
various components of the final grade
posted here
as they become available.
The Winter 2012 and Fall/Winter 2011-2012
course evaluation web site
is now available on-line.
Students are encouraged to visit this web page and complete the
course evaluation for MATH 1310 any time from March 15, 2012 to
April 2, 2012.
Assigned exercises
The
list of assigned exercises will
grow with each lecture, so check it regularly. These exercises will
not be marked, but they will be collected and checked for
completeness. The record of completed exercises will be used to
caculate the 10% assignment mark. Each assignment must be ready to
hand in by the end of the lecture on the deadline day. However, the
assignments will only be collected on a random basis.
The answers for most exercises are available at the end of the book
or in the solutions manual. But since the questions on the mid-term
and final
examinations will be based on the exercises, you are well advised to
to make an honest attempt to solve these before consulting the
answers. Submitted solutions must show all your work.
