I do not believe that Lucas and Whitely’s thought processes differ to any
great degree; neither is more machine-like than the other. However, given the
nature of the human mind, both of them have acquired different data over the
years, allowing different conclusions to be reached. Unlike machines, many of
which may rely on one program to run them in many situations, no two human
beings ever receive the exact same stimuli.
Lucas makes a convincing argument for Mechanism being false. Certainly,
machines are wonderful things to have and make excellent tools for our
everyday lives. It is a rather comforting thought, however, to think that
human minds are superior to, or at least different from, machines, no matter
what their similarities.
