Linear transformations and their representation by matrices, change of basis and similarity,
eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization, inner product spaces, orthogonality, the Gram-Schmidt algorithm, least squares approximations, abstract vector spaces, various applications.

Prerequisite:  AS/SC/MATH 1025 3.0 or AS/SC/AK/MATH 2221 3.0.

MATH LAB:   Assistance with mathematical questions on the course or the homework is available
                      at the ``Mathematics and Statistics Laboratory'',  room S525 Ross,
                      beginning on Tuesday, February 27,   weekdays 10:00--15:00.

SYLLABUS:   We will study the following sections:
                      Chapter 5:   sections 4 - 6;
                      Chapter 6:   sections 1 - 5;
                      Chapter 7:   sections 1 - 3;
                      Chapter 8:   sections 1 - 5;
                      Chapter 9:   section  3

HOMEWORK:   You are expected to do  all of the assigned homework. Experience has shown that the only    way to learn math is to do it - math is not a spectator sport!   The amount you learn in this course and the grade you receive will be proportional to the amount of time you spend doing problems.

EXAMS:    There will be four quizzes, one in-class midterm test and the final exam.

    Quizzes:              10:45 a.m. March  8,  22,  April   19,  May  3.
    Midterm exam:    10:30 a.m. April  5.

MARKS:    The final exam will count as 40% of your mark, the midterm exam will count as 30% of your mark and the quizzes will count as 10% of your mark (best 3 of the 4 quizzes).

MISSED EXAMS:    There will be no make-up exams for missed quizzes or missed in-class exams. Upon presentation of documentation of a valid excuse, the corresponding percentage of the final mark will be added to the final exam. With no presentation of such documentation a grade of zero will be entered for the missed quiz or exam.
