The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at York University welcomes graduate students in statistics and related areas to attend this year’s Southern Ontario Statistical Graduate Students Seminar Days on May 12th and 13th, 2005.
The purpose of SOSGSSD is to provide a forum for graduate students to discuss their latest work and research, exchange ideas and establish connections for future collaborations. Each day we will open the floor to give students, for 20 minutes at a time, the opportunity to present their research and/or projects. The registration fee will be refunded for any participants who are willing to give presentations. This seminar is also a good chance for those students who are new to the graduate program to hear from more experienced students.
Additionally, two keynote speakers are scheduled to discuss select topics in statistics/biostatistics: Dr. Hemant Ishwaran from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Dr. Richard J. Cook from the University of Waterloo. Dr. Judy-Anne Chapman, the Chair of the Statistical Society of Canada Initial Accreditation Committee, will make a guest appearance to introduce and discuss the process of acquiring professional certification as a statistician. The discussion will be continued by Ivan Hon from Scotiabank. He will also talk about general statistical skills needed in the financial industry.
To encourage interaction between students from various universities, we will host a lunch each day, and a banquet dinner on the first evening of the event. The registration fee is $40. Payment and registration details are available here. Participants must register by Saturday, April 30, 2005. If you are interested in presenting, your abstract should be submitted by Monday, April 25, 2005. This can be conveniently done online.
Organizers: Nikolai Slobodianik, Tao Sun, Konstantin Tsukker, Zilin Wang.
