Based on the feedback from students concerning their different experiences with MA1581, I have settled on the following syllabus for MA2581. Sections 2.8 and 2.9 Section 3.6 Sections 4.3 and 4.4 Sections 5.5 through 5.7 Sections 6.4 through 6.8 with a brief review of Sections 6.1 through 6.3 Sections 7.1 through 7.3 Sections 8.1 through 8.4 Sections 9.1 through 9.6 Further details: Section 3.6 will be treated last; it is the section I have chosen to drop if we run out of time since later sections of the text do not depend on it. Section 7.4 was covered by most students in MA1581. There will be no additional treatment of depreciation in MA2581. Sections 8.2 and 8.3 will be treated very lightly; we will only discuss probability and expectation as they apply to problems that relate to mortality. So from Section 8.2, we will cover Example 5 and Exercises A9, A10, and A11; from Section 8.3, Exercise A7. Supplementary material for Chapter 9 will be posted on ACADLABS at a later date. In addition to the above, there is the spreadsheet component of the course. I will occasionally bring a computer to class to demonstrate the use of EXCEL. There will be some questions on tests and on the final exam that require a basic knowledge of EXCEL. You will need to understand the distinction between absolute and relative cell references and be comfortable using many of EXCEL's built-in financial functions and the Goal-Seek operation. Here is a list of those sections covered in MA1581 that continue to be essential for MA2581; test and exam questions may require use of this background material. Sections 2.1 through 2.7 Sections 3.1 through 3.5 Sections 4.1 and 4.2 Sections 5.1 through 5.3 Sections 6.1 through 6.3 It is safe to assume that there will be no questions on simple interest in MA2581.
