Level Standard to be achieved for performance at the specified level

9 (A+) Fully achieves the purpose of the task, while insightfully interpreting, extending

8 (A) Fully achieves the purpose of the task, with some insight.

7 (B+) Accomplishes the purposes of the task.

*Displays understanding of major concepts,

*Shows clear understanding of concepts, but may include extraneous information or some less important ideas may be missing.

6 (B) Substantially completes purposes of the task.

*Displays substantial understanding of major concepts, even though some less important ideas may be missing and includes extraneous information.

*Communicates successfully.

5 (C+) Purpose of the task not fully achieved; needs elaboration;

some strategies may be ineffectual or not appropriate; assumptions about the purposes may be flawed.

*Gaps in conceptual understanding are evident.

4 (C) Similar to C+, with larger gaps.

3 (D+) Important purposes of the task not achieved; work may

2,1 (E,F) Purposes of the task not accomplished.

*Shows little evidence of appropriate reasoning.

*Does not successfully communicate relevant ideas.

Work below a 6 (B) may be returned to be redone. At this stage (third year), it is essential that students work to the corresponding standards of mathematical thinking and presentation. In professional matheamtics, it is common for journals to require a rewrite of a mathematical paper. It seems appropriate to require the same from upper level students!
